That number has improved, but delays persist amid other challenges at Navy shipyards. The Navy acknowledged that it found jet fuel in the drinking water aboard the carrier USS Nimitz. A new investigation says that no one realized a water tank was polluted with jet fuel for more than a year. A failed manway cover gasket then allowed the leak into the offline potable water tank. US Navy"When developing the sequencing document used to empty potable water tanks, the ship was unaware that any of the tanks contained JP-5," the investigation says. Polluted water on Navy ships is not isolated to these two vessels.

But Nimitz will be only the second nuclear-powered carrier to go through deactivation and defueling. The Nimitz would only be the second American nuclear-powered carrier scheduled to be scrapped. The first is the USS Enterprise, which was commissioned in 1961 and was also the world's first nuclear-powered carrier. The private shipyard will probably be in Alabama, Texas, or Virginia, according to a draft environmental impact statement posted on a special Navy carrier disposal website.

Those tanks were immediately isolated and secured from the potable water system," Naval Air Forces Cmdr. A sailor on the ship — and their parents — told Insider that the issue was worse than what the Navy originally revealed to the public. Navy and Marine Corps veterans told Insider that sailors on Navy flattops, aircraft carriers and amphibious assault ships, have been drinking and bathing in water contaminated by jet fuel for decades.
